TREE OF LIBERTY
"...extremism in defense of liberty is no vice...moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."
If you enjoy history, mystery and intrigue...
Lawrence Allen is an author of the first order. Tree of Liberty is an amazing first novel. If you enjoy history, mystery and intrigue, this book is for you.--donnal

Entertaining and Thought Provoking
The entertainment and thought provoking power of the story and main characters were some of the best I've had the pleasure of reading. The expression of virtue, freedom, and the courage required to take action is monumental, yet seems to settle naturally. I hope future generations can grasp the truth, value, and the cost of freedom revealed in Tree of Liberty and commit to maintaining it.--Billy G. Powers

Interesting first Novel - Read it for a great journey across Asian Modern History and more...
Fascinating book with many different angles and twists. Puts Asia and its modern history in an interesting perspective. The final book, Revolution, is an interesting reminder about the need to also put history in perspective--Torbjorn Karlsson (Singapore)

Events That HAVE Happened And Those That COULD Happen Very Easily
This story captivated me. I wanted to savor all the details of Curtiss's journey, but I wanted to race to see the resolution of his journey as well. Lawrence Allen takes his time laying out each adventure Curtiss encounters and weaves them all together into a single coherent narrative. He writes about Curtiss in the context of events that HAVE happened and those that COULD very easily happen both in the U.S. and abroad. I didn't have to suspend my disbelief to get into this story. I am looking forward to reading more of Allen's work.--Bill Rinderknecht

Across Time, Politics and Intrigue
Spending several years in China and Hong Kong myself, the first book in this trilogy took me back to the street markets, the intrigue, and mystery of experiencing a such a different place than one I had always known for the first time. Making notes of the different locations, I thought of even following the trail of the main character, visiting, seeing smelling, all these unique places. Hitting on those memories was the best part of Book 1. Book 2 shifts to a vision of the rise of James Bond. A spy during the cold war feel with a China twist - a fusion of ideas and lands, just like the main character. Book 3 makes me think of the 'ghost of christmas future." What would the world be like if our political current path remains unchanged. Watching a character grow and change over decades was very interesting. Admittedly, I was not always pulling for him. Would I have done the same if I were Curtiss in Tiananmen Square? His actions are not always glorious, but certainly adds to the depth. For me, it was truly 3 books in 1. Recommended.--James Ab

Must Read For All Ages!! This Radio TV Personality Loves It! Book of the Month in my BOOK!!
There are times in our life when a book makes such an impact you feel as if you should tell the world! Tree of Liberty is just such a book. This book is so action packed and exotic I could not put it down. It would be easy to say I "love" the book (and this reader thoroughly enjoyed every word), more importantly, the book made me think--leaving me with what was not necessarily a warm, fuzzy feeling! This book made me take a hard look at where we are in our country. It's a "call to action" book that left me feeling as if sitting on my hands is just not enough!
The book is a saga of two generations and it takes you on a whirlwind trip through Communist China and overflows into the United States. From the author's perspective, after living in China for over 20+ years, the main character Curtiss experiences the staggering transformation of what was pre-Tiananmen Square to post-Tiananmen Square. He delivers us from country to country within the continent of China, inspecting the complex cultures that overlap.
Through the main character Curtiss you see and experience what it was to live in all parts of China and meet the Chinese people, from rural China to the big cities, it is a thrill ride from cover to cover. Espionage, adventure, and romance this book has it all! This BOOK is a must read for all ages and should be mandatory for all high school and college students!
Tree of Liberty reinforced everything I have ever known in my heart about China and the Far East. Being fortunate to have lived and worked in the Far East it brought back so many fond memories about the people of Asia. This Novel is Kathryn's Pick for the month!!! A MUST READ FOR EVERY GENERATION!!!!!

So Believable It Felt Like Prophesy
"It is labeled fiction, but it reads so believably as non-fiction and suddenly as potential prophesy. Allen gives some great history of recent China and weaves a fascinating believable story of love and intrigue. Love the final portion of the trilogy!

Those Who Don't Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It
"I was intrigued by Allen's vision of dystopian America and his agreement with Edmund Burke's statement: "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." Although I think his dystopia is a little simplistic I agree with him and Burke. I think we are in for a world of hurt in the United States because we have not learned from our own and other people's mistakes.
Allen's keen insight into China is well worth the price of the book. His cultural understanding reflected in his book helps those of us who only have seen China from a distance know the culture and country better. For me this understanding of China and the Chinese makes the book well worth reading."

It Took A World Traveller To Write This Book
Observations by Bob Steinkamp
1. The book was written in such detail I thought it was an autobiography, but we haven't reached the 2016~2020 years yet [years covered in book 3 of the Trilogy].
2. Curtiss's [protagonist] value system and life prerogatives were always explicit and clear, and he lived them.
3. Curtiss's 'Lives'/'Crossroads': cause and effect due to events and/or specific people were detailed and understandable.
4. The evolution of the destruction of America was accurately presented.
5. The Riflemen [he forms] and their approach describes the issues that need to be corrected, but I hope and pray we/our successors find a less violent way to recover America.
It took a world traveler with actual experiences to write this book. That was Lawrence Allen. Congratulations on an enjoyable and well done piece of work!!!.--Bob Steinkamp

When I initially was sent notice of this work for review purposes, I thought that I would be receiving the first book of a trilogy. However, what I got was the entire trilogy in one volume!
There is an interesting story here related to the rescuing of America from its post-constitutional dystopia. One may not necessarily agree with all of the methods used in starting their new revolution. However, many of us can understand their utter frustration as we see the same kinds of situations which are pictured in the book as leading up to the destruciton of America's freedom happening right now before our very eyes.
